Driving Directions to Isla Holbox

Holbox Island

From the airport go toward Cancun Central (not the hotel zone). Or, if you are coming from Playa del Carmen, pass both the Merida and the Airport exits. You will go into central Cancun. At this point, DO NOT follow any signs that say Chichen Itza or Merida - if you go that way you will end up on the toll-road (known as the CUOTA) and there is no exit from the toll-road to Holbox. Be sure your tank is full of gas before leaving Cancun.(Important tip: Always follow signs that say "Merida - Libre" and never follow signs that say "Merida - Cuota")

• As you are heading into "Cancun Centro", you are on BLVD. LUIS DONALDO COLOSIO, it's the main highway (a 4 laner) from Playa del Carmen to Cancun. You will turn left at PARQUE KABAH / AVE. RODRIGO GOMEZ. Watch for traffic lights and a gas station.

• Follow this road (also 4 lanes) for approximately 4.5km until you arrive at AVE. LOPEZ PORTILLO. The intersection is a big roundabout with gray columns in the center. Go about 3/4 around to exit on the right street.

• Now you're on the CANCUN - MERIDA LIBRE road (It's 4 lanes and later narrows to only 2 lanes). Follow this road out of town and be careful with the traffic bumps! In every village there are several! You will pass through the following villages: Map to Holbox Leona Vicario, Valladolid Nuevo, Cristobal Colon, Santo Domingo, El Tintal, El Pozito, Ignacion Zaragoza. About 2 miles after Ignacio Zaragoza there is a custom check point. (km 80, village "El Ideal" is right behind the check point). • Immediately after the customs check point turn to the right. There is a sign reading HOLBOX - CHIQUILA (hard to see after dark!)

• Follow this road and pass through some more small villages. After 10km. or so you'll pass through a village called El Cedral. After the village you'll come to a fork in the road - pick it up. (just making sure you're paying attention!) At the fork, keep to the right.

• Follow on through Kantunil-Kin (a good sized town) and Solferino. After Solferino it's 10 more kilometers to Chiquilá.

• At Chiquilá, leave your car in one of the nearby parking lots (cost 30 pesos/day) and take the boat to Holbox.

• The Holbox Island Ferry runs from Chiquilá to Holbox. Price is 40 pesos (approx. $5.00 US per person - one way) When you arrive at the Holbox pier there are golf carts and tricicleros which can transport you to the hotel. (approx. 40 pesos)

• Private boats are also available all day. These can take you from Chiquilá directly to the beach at the hotel. Cost will be approx. 250-300 pesos (28.00-33.00 $US) But, after 7 or 8pm it can be difficult to find small boats willing to take you to Holbox, so plan your travel times accordingly.

If you'd rather not drive, we'll be glad to set up transportation for you!
